What about formula five or formula six those are real entry level Championships not just formula 4!!!

Formula Renault 3.5 and FIA Formula 3000 were awesome. Especially F3000 from the 90s and early 2000s, way more "hairy" cars to drive than GP2 (or what is now called F2).

The ladder system is still a broken system. The scholarship is only 1 year, and after that year they are screwed. Struggling teams will usually take on the Indy lights champion and the results are off due to the car so they end up fading from relevance. imo……the Indy lights and f2 champions are actually getting punished for being good. I might be able to name more Indy lights champions that are no longer in Indycar than Indy lights champions that are currently in Indycar. And they don’t just all of sudden forget how to drive.

The biggest problem S5000 faces is illustrated by the attempt by V8 Supercars to derail it with their own series. This disingenuous stunt, which produced a car that could never have complied with modern safety standards, was nothing more than a veiled attempt to kill it. V8 Supercars wants nothing more that total _de facto_ control of Australian motorsport and anything that looks like it might be popular has to be controlled first and then killed off as quickly as possible. The extent of their control is so insidious that even at the first event at Sandown in 2019, the back straight spectator areas were closed off. They are only allowed open when V8 Stupidcars race there. S5000 might be slightly antediluvian in its concept and the cars might not be as fast as originally planned but they are challenging and difficult to drive and with the right support, would be able to grow in a way that threatens the hegemony of a category that is 20 years past its use-by date and has now descended into Machiavellian power games in order to remain relevant. Keep up the good work.

Good explanation. After watching for a couple of seasons, there are a few things that have emerged. Firstly, the racing has been, by and large, good. A lot of new drivers have had a chance to get some experience in a serious “wings and slicks” racing car. Secondly, the extremely raw nature of these cars means that you can see them twitching and moving as the drivers scrabble for control. Thirdly, they have been at a lot of the best and most challenging tracks in the country. And finally, they did actually make their proper race debut at Albert Park this year with a full field of 16 cars, giving them really good international exposure. But like anything, there is room for improvement. The first series revealed that the car had understeer problems. It wasn’t a total disaster but it was clear from onboard video vision that their speed potential was being hampered (it still is but for other reasons). In recent times, Hoosier has built a new front tyre which seems to have addressed about 75% of it. But in my opinion, the tyres remain a problem. It takes an average of about five laps to get them up to temperature and it doesn’t matter how many times the commentators say “How good are these Hoosier tyres”, they are too hard. I don’t mind them lasting a weekend but a whole series… no. For that reason, we are not seeing lap records tumble in quite the way some might have hoped. Simon Wills’ Formula Holden record at Phillip Island hasn’t been seriously challenged yet. Sandown and Simmons Plains both went though. Second problem is that the races are by time rather than a set number of laps so they tend to spend a lot of time under safety car, which is not ideal. Third problem is that the feature race is too short. For a track with drivers averaging lap times around 1.30 they should be doing 20 laps for the feature race, making for a half an hour instead of just 20 minutes. Finally, the publicity hasn’t been up to snuff. It all comes down to one guy and it can take days to get vision up online and there’s very little of it. Come on Chris, you’ll have do a bit better than that if you want to showcase this to the world. But it’s a good idea and quite well implemented so far. They are obviously challenging to drive and the races at Phillip Island, in particular, have been very good. Bathurst was a bit of a flop, IMHO. Albert Park has been good so far. Hopefully, there will be more international interest in it and we can get them over to New Zealand at some point.

Formula 2 is exciting as hell! Those guys fight like dogs from the very first lap to the last. I'm looking forward to it.

What if there are more teams wanting to participate than there are spots on the grid? Will they then resort to pre-qualifying or will it be split up in groups?

F1 should definitely inherit this Scholarship method..that financial barrier would definitely be broken in some way shape or form!

Meanwhile, Gilles Villeneuve jumped right from Atlantic series to F1 and Jacques went from CART to F1. The Super Licence point system has frankly been a double edged sword, on the one hand the lower end of the field isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, but on the other hand the past 20 years has had no new drivers of the calibre of Schumacher, Senna or the Villeneuves. It's quite unfortunate seeing the skills gap shrunk due to this change and the outcome of races now being almost entirely based on the quality gap between the cars.
